「a little（少しの～）, little（ほとんど～ない）」は、数えられない名詞（不加算名詞）につく。「a few（少しの～）, few（ほとんど～ない）」は、数えられる名詞（加算名詞）につく。「a」をつけると肯定的な意味になり、つけないと否定的な意味になる。「little（少しも～ない）とa little（少しだけ）」は副詞としての用法もあるが「a few,few」にはない。
